Ogun Methodist Bishop Urges Stronger Security Action, Condemns Cybercrime

The Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Remo in Ogun State, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun for their roles in advancing national development, while also calling for more decisive action to tackle insecurity and the country’s economic challenges.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the conclusion of the church’s 35th synod held in Ijoku, Sagamu.

The document was jointly signed by the Diocesan Bishop, Rev. Bamidele Ibikunle; Secretary, Revd. Jacob Ayedona; and Lay President, Dr. Akinola Soname.

According to the communiqué made available to journalists on Saturday, the synod was declared open by Governor Abiodun, who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya.

The gathering drew 283 delegates, comprising 56 clergy and 227 laity, alongside several dignitaries from both religious and public spheres.

Notable church leaders in attendance included The Most Rev. Adegbemi A. Adewale; Rt. Rev. S. A. Adegbite; Rt. Rev. Amos Ogunrinde; and Rt. Rev. Babatunde Ogunbanwo, among others.

In its assessment, the synod commended ongoing efforts in infrastructure development, peace-building initiatives, education, healthcare, and the promotion of religious harmony.

It specifically highlighted the Gateway International Airport project initiated by the Ogun State Government, noting its potential to enhance the state’s economic prospects.

Despite the commendation, the church expressed deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity across the country and urged the Federal Government to take stronger action.

“The Synod raised concerns over the rate of insecurity but emphasized kidnapping, banditry in some parts of the nation such as Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Borno States.

There is urgent need for stronger measures against religiously motivated violence and kidnapping.”

The communiqué also drew attention to the economic difficulties faced by citizens, urging authorities to address inflation, poverty, and hardship, particularly at the grassroots level.

“While commending ongoing development, it urged the Federal government to tackle economic hardship, inflation, and poverty, especially at the grassroots.”

The synod further stressed the importance of investing in key sectors such as education and healthcare, especially in underserved communities, while advocating closer collaboration between government and faith-based organisations to promote social welfare and peace.

“The Synod calls for increased investment in education and healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas while also calling for enhanced collaboration between government and faith-based organizations to promote social welfare, justice, reconciliation, and peace.”

On social issues, the church condemned cybercrime and called for meaningful engagement of young people in productive ventures.

“The Synod condemned the activities of Yahoo boys and girls and counselled that they should be properly educated and be engaged in profitable ventures.”

“It therefore calls for ceasefire to allow for peace talk. This will restore normally across the globe. The Synod advice world leaders not to play politics with sensitive issues that is capable of sending the entire modern world back into obscurity.”

Additionally, Nigerians were encouraged to prioritise their health and build economic resilience, while the government was urged to improve infrastructure and provide support to businesses.

“Citizens were advised to prioritize their mental and physical health and reduce reliance on foreign medical care.

“Government was urged to provide better infrastructure, utilities, and financial support to retain businesses and stimulate economic growth.”

The communiqué concluded with prayers for national leaders and a call for renewed focus on governance priorities.

“Finally, the Synod calls on the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and the Vice President, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, GCON as they continue to manage the affairs of the nation and urges them to pay attention to economic reforms, security overhaul and national coherence.

The Synod prays that God will grant them wisdom and renewed strength to take our nation to greater and enviable heights.”
