Obi, Kwankwaso Formally Join NDC In Abuja

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Both politicians were received into the party on Sunday, May 3, at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja, marking a notable development in ongoing opposition realignments ahead of future elections.

Their entry comes amid increasing political consultations among opposition figures seeking to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, following months of discussions around coalition-building and party restructuring.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recently emerged as one of the platforms attracting attention from key political actors exploring alternatives to existing party structures.

Obi, who previously left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before contesting the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, had been part of wider opposition engagements in recent months.

Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has also remained a central figure in opposition politics, particularly in northern Nigeria.

Their formal alignment with the NDC is expected to further reshape discussions around coalition strategies and political alliances as the country moves closer to the next electoral cycle.
