The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Adeyeye, on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, presented a seven-year scorecard of the agency’s operations, highlighting sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s food and drug regulatory framework.
The review, which covered developments since she assumed office in November 2017, detailed strengthened enforcement actions, improved compliance within regulated industries, and expanded public sensitization campaigns aimed at reducing the circulation of substandard and falsified products.
A major highlight of the presentation was Nigeria’s partnership with the African Medicines Agency (AMA), a continental regulatory platform designed to harmonize medicines oversight and strengthen the fight against counterfeit and unsafe pharmaceuticals across Africa.
Adeyeye described the collaboration as a strategic step toward closing regulatory loopholes that allow the movement of falsified medicines within the region, stressing that coordinated action across African countries remains critical to public health protection.

She cautioned Nigerians against purchasing medicines from unapproved sources, urging strict reliance on licensed pharmacies and insisting on receipts to ensure accountability and traceability in drug transactions.
According to her, compliance levels within Nigeria’s regulated food and pharmaceutical sectors have improved significantly over the years, driven by sustained enforcement, surveillance and stakeholder engagement by the agency.
However, she noted that regulatory reform is a gradual process that requires continued cooperation from manufacturers, distributors and consumers to achieve lasting impact.
The NAFDAC chief added that the African Medicines Agency framework would further strengthen cross-border collaboration, improve regulatory consistency across member states, and reinforce efforts to eliminate counterfeit and substandard medicines from circulation across the continent.
