Onanuga Faults Obi’s One-Term Presidency Promise, Questions His Political Loyalty

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has reacted to recent comments by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, questioning the credibility of Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president.

Onanuga, in a post shared on his X account in the early hours of Thursday, said Obi’s political history showed that his promises and loyalties had often changed over time.

“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga wrote.

He referenced Obi’s time in the All Progressives Grand Alliance, alleging that the former Anambra State governor once pledged never to leave the party that made him governor and also swore loyalty to the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

According to Onanuga, Obi eventually left APGA for the People’s Democratic Party and later moved across different political platforms.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances,” Onanuga stated.

The presidential aide’s reaction followed the release of a teaser from an interview Obi granted to News Central TV on Wednesday.

In the interview, Obi said he would be willing to serve only one term in office in the interest of national stability.

“I want to be a one person  president because of stability. I would not stay a day longer than four years… even with a gun in my head,” Obi said in the interview teaser circulated online.

The remarks have since generated debate across social media, with supporters and critics of the former presidential candidate expressing differing views over the feasibility and sincerity of the pledge.
