The Labour Party has inaugurated an eight-member screening committee to oversee the verification of aspirants vying for elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was announced in a public notice jointly issued on Friday in Abuja by the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma.
According to the notice, the committee was constituted in accordance with the party’s constitution and the electoral guidelines guiding the 2026 primary elections.
Nenadi Usman will head the panel, while members include Mrs Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke and Dr Olu Ayewo. Obioma is to serve as the committee’s secretary.

The party stated that the panel would conduct the screening of aspirants seeking to contest presidential, governorship and National Assembly seats before recommending eligible candidate for participation in the party primaries.
It further explained that the committee would authenticate credentials submitted by aspirants and ensure that all contestants comply with the party’s constitution, provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, and regulations issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Under the timetable released by the party, governorship and House of Assembly aspirants are scheduled for screening on May 20, while those contesting presidential and National Assembly positions will appear before the panel on May 22.
The Labour Party also charged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with integrity as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
