The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to immediately investigate allegations that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) diverted about N800 billion for political and campaign purposes.
In a statement issued on Sunday, SERAP urged the INEC chairman to ensure that the probe is carried out “promptly, thoroughly, impartially, independently, transparently and effectively.”
The organisation also demanded full disclosure from the APC and the governors involved regarding alleged contributions made to any campaign fund, including the identities of donors and the lawful sources of the money.
According to SERAP, Nigerians deserve to know who is financing political parties and candidates seeking public office, stressing that opaque political financing poses a major threat to democracy and accountability.
The group further urged INEC to collaborate with relevant anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies to investigate possible violations of political finance laws and impose sanctions where necessary.

“Applicable sanctions should include prosecution, fines and forfeiture of any unlawful contributions,” the statement said.
SERAP argued that the alleged diversion of public funds for electoral purposes raises serious concerns about political finance transparency, electoral fairness, and citizens’ constitutional right to freely participate in governance.
The organisation warned that the misuse of state resources for political advantage undermines democratic integrity and erodes public trust in the electoral system.
It added that fairness, accountability, and transparency in campaign financing are essential safeguards against corruption, state capture, and undue political influence in democratic processes.
