Oyo Halts External School Activities Over Kidnap Threats

The Oyo State Government has banned all school excursions, field trips, inter-school sports competitions and other activities involving movement of students outside school premises, following renewed security concerns after recent abductions in parts of the state.

The directive, contained in a circular dated Friday, May 22, 2026, was issued by the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and signed by Permanent Secretary, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye.

It takes immediate effect and overrides all earlier approvals for external school activities.

The circular, distributed to TESCOM, SUBEB, Tutor-Generals, Zonal Directors, education inspectors, principals and head teachers, follows a coordinated attack in Oriire Local Government Area near Oyo State’s Ogbomoso axis, where students and teachers were abducted, with several victims still in captivity.

The ministry said the measure was necessary due to heightened security risks, stressing that student safety remains paramount.

It directed schools to suspend all external activities immediately, keep students within premises during school hours and report any suspicious movement to security agencies.

The directive remains in force pending improvement in the security situation.
