The University of Jos has ordered the immediate evacuation of all students from its hostels following a surge in insecurity in and around the city on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
The decision comes after unrest in nearby communities created a tense environment that threatened the safety of students on campus.
In a statement, the university’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, described the situation as “near-chaotic” in areas surrounding the institution, citing the recent disturbances as the impetus for urgent action.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, approved the evacuation to safeguard students while the university coordinated with security agencies to manage the operation.
The statement confirmed that the Plateau State Government, under Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, is providing transportation and logistical support to ensure students are moved safely.

To facilitate the evacuation despite the ongoing curfew in parts of Jos, the vehicles deployed have been fully authorized to operate during restricted hours.
The university management emphasised that the move is precautionary and aimed solely at protecting lives while security conditions are assessed.
The evacuation follows recent violent incidents in Jos, including attacks in communities close to the university that resulted in casualties and heightened public fear.
University officials have not yet specified when students will be allowed to return to the hostels, stating that updates will be provided as the security situation evolves.
State authorities have increased patrols and deployed security personnel across the city in response to the unrest, while the university continues to liaise with the government to monitor developments and ensure student safety.
