The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has received the report on the proposed upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a university, describing it as a strategic initiative to advance agriculture, science, and technology in the state.
The development was confirmed in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Tuesday.
Aiyedatiwa made the remarks on Monday while reviewing the committee’s report on the proposed University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Owo, at his office in Akure.
He commended the thoroughness of the submission, which included a campus master plan, academic brief, sustainability framework, and other essential documents.
“This work reflects a clear vision and meticulous planning,” he said.
“The calibre of experts involved and the research conducted leave no doubt that this university can become one of the best in Nigeria.”
He highlighted that the project aligns with national priorities in agriculture and rural development. “Artificial intelligence and technology will drive higher agricultural yields and sustainable rural livelihoods.

Science and technology must underpin everything we do, including food production and wealth creation,” he added.
The governor also called for careful management of the transition to protect the academic progress of current students.
“We must manage the shift carefully while preparing for a university capable of competing nationally,” he said.
Presenting the report, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the upgrade addresses growing demand for university education among youths.
“The objective is aptly reflected in the proposed name, University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Owo, underscoring our commitment to innovation, applied knowledge, and technological advancement,” Ajibefun said.
He explained that the proposed university would offer faculties across key disciplines, including agriculture, engineering, computing, and social sciences, designed to meet national and global development needs.
Ajibefun added that a five-year development plan has been prepared to ensure financial sustainability and uninterrupted academic activities, while a draft enabling law has also been developed for legislative approval.
The state government reiterated its commitment to strengthening higher education and positioning the proposed university as a competitive institution within Nigeria.
