The Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent reduction in fares on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation as part of measures to ease transportation costs during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The fare discount, approved through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, will take effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and remain valid until Monday, June 1, 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement signed on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi.
According to the statement, passengers travelling on NRC routes nationwide will pay half of the existing approved fares throughout the six-day period.
The ministry explained that the initiative was introduced to support Nigerians facing rising transportation costs during the festive season and to make travel easier for Muslim faithful celebrating Eid-el-Kabir.
“The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, has approved a 50 per cent fare discount on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation as part of measures to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” Adebiyi stated.
The ministry further clarified that passengers who had already purchased tickets before the announcement would not be excluded from the relief package.
According to Adebiyi, such passengers would receive rebates equivalent to 50 per cent of their ticket costs, which could be reused for train journeys before the expiration date of the offer.

“Passengers who had earlier purchased tickets at the full fare before the announcement will be entitled to a 50 per cent rebate, reusable for train rides on or before Monday, June 1, 2026,” he explained.
Despite the temporary reduction in fares, the Federal Ministry of Transportation confirmed that train schedules and operational timetables across all routes would remain unchanged during the festive period.
The ministry also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued patronage and support for the country’s railway transportation system.
“The Federal Ministry of Transportation appreciates the continued support of Nigerians and wishes all passengers and the Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration. Eid Mubarak,” the statement added.
The development comes amid growing reliance on rail transport by Nigerians due to rising fuel costs and increased road transportation fares across the country.
