Kidnapped Abia Orthopaedic Surgeon Regains Freedom After Nine Days in Captivity

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State branch, has announced the release of abducted orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha, who regained his freedom after spending nine days in captivity.

Dr Aguocha, a former chairman of the NMA in Abia State, was kidnapped on Sunday, May 26, 2026, an incident that sparked widespread concern within the medical community and prompted the association to threaten an indefinite strike action beginning June 2.

However, in a statement jointly signed by the NMA State Chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the State Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye, the association confirmed that the surgeon was released on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Following his release, the NMA announced the suspension of its planned total and indefinite strike action across the state.

The association expressed gratitude to God for preserving the doctor’s life and ensuring his safe return to his family, colleagues and patients.

“The Association expresses profound gratitude to the Government of Abia State led by Governor Alex Otti, the Government of Imo State led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and all security agencies whose efforts contributed to securing his release,” the statement read.

The NMA also appreciated members of the public, healthcare workers and media organisations for their support, prayers and advocacy throughout the period of his captivity.

Despite celebrating the doctor’s release, the association expressed concern over the increasing targeting of healthcare workers by kidnappers, describing the trend as unacceptable and dangerous to the health sector.

The association noted that unresolved cases, including the abduction of Prof. Iweha in 2020, continue to affect the morale of medical professionals and undermine healthcare delivery.

The NMA called on both the Federal and State Governments to strengthen security around healthcare facilities and personnel, while demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and the prosecution of those responsible.

“The recurring targeting of doctors severely undermines healthcare delivery and the morale of professionals working under already difficult conditions,” the statement added.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to providing healthcare services to residents of Abia State and pledged to continue engaging relevant authorities to ensure a safer working environment for medical practitioners.

It also wished Dr Aguocha a speedy recovery from the physical and psychological trauma resulting from the abduction.
