Police Dismiss Abducted Oyo Schoolchild’s Death As False, Warn Against Misinformation

The Oyo State Police Command has debunked reports claiming that one of the pupils abducted during the recent attack on schools in Ahoro-Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area, died while in captivity, describing the publication as false and aimed at causing panic.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the report lacked any factual basis and was deliberately designed to mislead the public and undermine ongoing rescue operations.

According to the police, no security agency involved in efforts to secure the release of the abducted children has confirmed such a development.

“The report is false, misleading, mischievous, and without any factual basis whatsoever,” the statement said. “At no time has the Oyo State Police Command, nor any other recognised security agency involved in the ongoing rescue efforts, confirmed such a development.”

The Command accused the authors of the report of using emotional narratives and unverified claims to stir public anxiety and manipulate public opinion, warning that such actions could embolden criminal elements and disrupt security operations.

Police authorities expressed concern that the circulation of unverified information could create unnecessary fear among residents, inflict additional trauma on affected families, and compromise efforts to secure the safe return of the victims.

The Command reiterated that security agencies remain actively engaged in the rescue mission and are handling the situation with professionalism, diligence, and confidentiality.

It also cautioned bloggers, social media influencers, online content creators, and media organisations against spreading unconfirmed security-related information, stressing that the publication of false reports capable of inciting fear or public disorder is irresponsible.

“The Command therefore appeals to all media houses, bloggers, and online content creators to exercise professionalism, responsibility, and due diligence in the discharge of their duties,” the statement added.

Residents were urged to disregard the report and rely only on updates released through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorised government agencies.

The police further assured the public of their commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining security, promising to provide verified information as developments unfold in the ongoing investigation and rescue efforts.
