Democracy Day: FG Reaffirms Commitment To Unity, Democratic Governance

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, fostering national unity and addressing the challenges facing the country as Nigeria marks the 27th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic rule.

This position was contained in a Democracy Day statement issued on Friday, June 5, by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

According to the minister, the government joined Nigerians across the country in prayers as part of activities leading to the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.

“Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Celebration, which occurs on June 12, 2026,” Idris stated.

He noted that the prayer session underscored the importance of collective responsibility in nation-building, stressing that Nigeria’s progress depends not only on government efforts but also on the support and participation of citizens.

“This solemn Juma’at service reminds us that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability require not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of all citizens.”

The minister said Democracy Day remains an important occasion to reflect on the sacrifices made by pro-democracy figures, particularly the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose struggle is widely regarded as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.

“As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey.”

Calling for greater unity among Nigerians, Idris urged citizens to embrace peaceful coexistence and reject divisive tendencies.
