Gombe Rep Yaya Tongo Dies After Brief Illness

Yaya Bauchi Tongo, member of the House of Representatives representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, has died at Nizamiye Hospital, in Abuja following a brief illness.

His death was confirmed on Friday, June 12, 2026, in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi, who said the information was relayed through the Gombe State caucus of the chamber.

Rotimi said the late lawmaker died in Abuja after a brief illness, describing him as a dedicated public servant whose political career was defined by steady engagement at both state and national levels.

Tongo previously served as Chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, Special Adviser to the Gombe State Government, and a member of the Gombe State House of Assembly before his election to the National Assembly.

In the House of Representatives, he chaired the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group and participated actively in legislative duties and constituency representation.

The statement said his colleagues received the news with shock, noting that he made contributions to debates and oversight activities on governance and development issues affecting his constituency and the country.

The leadership of the House extended condolences to his immediate family, constituents, and the government and people of Gombe State, describing his death as a painful loss to the legislature.

Rotimi added that details of parliamentary tributes and funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
