Veteran Actor Kola Oyewo Dies At 80, Theatre Loses Icon

The Nigerian theatre and film industry is mourning the death of veteran actor Kola Oyewo, a revered stage performer whose career spanned more than six decades.

Oyewo died at the age of 80, with news of his passing emerging on Friday, June 12, 2026, after actor Kunle Afod announced it in a tribute shared on Instagram.

Confirming the loss, Afod described the late actor as an outstanding talent whose contributions to Nigerian theatre and cinema would remain unforgettable.

“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow,” Afod wrote, praising the veteran performer’s enduring impact on the creative industry and noting that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo was widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Yoruba theatre.

His acting journey began in 1964 when he joined the renowned Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he developed the craft that would earn him national recognition.
