The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to mark the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Monday, June 15, 2026, in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
Oyelade said the decision underscores the government’s recognition of the spiritual significance of the Hijrah to Muslims and its place in Islamic history.

He explained that the Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, describing it as a defining event that continues to inspire reflection, renewal, and unity among the faithful.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, the government has declared Tuesday a work-free day in the state,” he said.
The commissioner urged Muslims in the state to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and across Nigeria.
He also called on residents to reflect on the values associated with the Hijrah and strengthen bonds of harmony, brotherhood, and collective responsibility.
