Obi To Youths: Your PVC Is Your Greatest Weapon

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian youths to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in the 2027 general elections, describing their votes as the most powerful tool for shaping the country’s future.

In a message addressed to Nigerian youths on Monday, Obi said the country’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup was disappointing but noted that the performances of Nigerian music stars Davido, Burna Boy and Rema at the tournament’s opening ceremony, as well as the exploits of Nigerian-born footballers representing other countries, offered some consolation.

He cited Germany international Felix Nmecha, who scored one of the fastest goals of the tournament, as an example of Nigerian talent excelling on the global stage.

Obi said the future of Nigeria rests largely in the hands of its young population, noting that more than 15 million Nigerians have attained voting age in the last three years.

“You are more stakeholders in Nigeria’s future than I am,” the 64-year-old former Anambra State governor said. “Over 15 million Nigerians have turned 18 in the last three years. That is enough to decide who becomes President, Governor, Senator, Member of the House of Representatives or Local Government Chairman.”

He urged young Nigerians not to allow frustration with politics to discourage them from participating in the democratic process.

“I know many of you are sceptical about politics and political parties. I understand why, but scepticism must not become surrender,” he said.

Obi encouraged youths to organise themselves in their communities, campuses, workplaces, places of worship and social groups to mobilise voters, engage in political discussions and demand accountability from leaders.

He also invited organised youth groups to engage with him directly, saying he was willing to meet them to discuss his plans for Nigeria.

“If you are organised and wish to hear directly from me, invite me. I will come and share my plans for you and our nation,” he said.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate concluded his appeal by urging young Nigerians to register, vote and take responsibility for determining the country’s leadership.

“My young friends, this is your country. Take it back. A New Nigeria is POssible,” Obi stated.
