June 12: Obi Urges National Soul-Searching, Questions Nigeria’s Democratic Progress

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has used the commemoration of June 12 Democracy Day to call for deep national reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, urging citizens and leaders to reassess the country’s progress since the historic 1993 election.

In a message shared on his official X handle on Friday, June 12, Obi said the annual observance should go beyond celebration to serve as a moment of honest evaluation of Nigeria’s electoral system and governance structures.

He said the date has become a recurring reminder for Nigerians to ask critical questions about democracy in practice, especially on the credibility of elections and the performance of public institutions.

“Today, we observe a day that should mean a great deal to us as a people who cherish democratic principles,” he wrote.

Obi said each Democracy Day offers an opportunity to measure whether the ideals of fairness, accountability, and transparency are being upheld in the country’s political system.

He raised concerns about whether elections today can be compared to the widely praised 1993 polls in terms of transparency and public trust.

The former Anambra governor also questioned whether the social contract between leaders and citizens is being honoured in contemporary governance.

Obi described June 12 as both a reminder of past struggles and a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic identity, rooted in collective sacrifice and the desire for popular rule.

“Ultimately, June 12 is a powerful blend of reflection and aspiration. It honours a fractured past while serving as a constant and foundational reminder of the immense power inherent in the collective democratic will of the Nigerian people,” he said.

According to him, the significance of the date extends beyond symbolism, forming the foundation of Nigeria’s modern democratic consciousness.

“For us in Nigeria, June 12 is not merely a date on the calendar; it is the emotional and structural bedrock of our modern democratic identity,” Obi stated.

He added that understanding the meaning of June 12 requires looking beyond history to the lived realities of democratic governance today.

Obi concluded his message with optimism, insisting that a stronger democratic future remains within reach. “A new era of true democracy is POssible. -PO”
