The Federal Government has officially launched FreeTV on June 17, 2026, marking the start of Nigeria’s nationwide transition from analogue broadcasting to a fully digital television system under the Digital Switchover programme.
The platform is expected to deliver over 100 free-to-air channels covering news, entertainment, sports, education, and culture, accessible without subscription fees on compatible digital receivers.
Officials say the rollout will improve signal quality, expand channel reach, and introduce clearer audio and higher-definition visuals through a hybrid digital terrestrial and satellite network designed for wider national coverage.

With the launch now active, households with set-top boxes or digital-ready television sets can begin accessing FreeTV services, while others are expected to transition as analogue signals are gradually phased out.
Government authorities describe the platform as a key milestone in Nigeria’s digital migration drive, aimed at modernising broadcasting infrastructure, improving content distribution, and expanding opportunities for local producers and advertisers.
They also say the system will enhance audience measurement and improve spectrum efficiency, creating additional value across the communications sector.
The June 17 rollout follows years of delayed implementation, now moving into full-scale deployment as Nigeria advances toward complete digital television migration.
