Peter Obi on Monday, June 22, 2026, called for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, saying the administration has failed to deliver on key promises and should be held accountable for Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges.
In a statement posted on his X account, the former Labour Party presidential candidate said he was inspired by the resignation announcement of the British Prime Minister, who is scheduled to leave office in July, describing it as an example of political responsibility and accountability in action.
Obi noted that the British leader’s decision followed mounting public dissatisfaction over economic stagnation, rising living costs and unmet campaign commitments. He argued that public officials must be prepared to take responsibility when they fail to meet the expectations of those they govern.
Drawing parallels with Nigeria’s political history, Obi recalled that before 2015, Tinubu had repeatedly criticised the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic hardship. He also referenced Tinubu’s calls for Jonathan to step down following the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.

The former Anambra State governor further pointed to promises made by Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign, including commitments to improve electricity supply, strengthen anti-corruption efforts and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
According to Obi, conditions in those areas have deteriorated, with persistent power shortages, escalating insecurity, increasing incidents of kidnapping and deepening economic hardship across the country.
He maintained that challenges confronting Nigerians have extended to critical sectors such as infrastructure, transportation and governance, insisting that the nation is experiencing a period of severe decline.
Obi said he was joining other Nigerians in demanding the President’s resignation over what he described as a “monumental failure in governance,” arguing that such a decision would help entrench a culture of accountability and responsibility in public office.
He added that leaders must recognize that public office is a trust bestowed by citizens and that failure to meet fundamental obligations should attract consequences, stressing that stronger accountability remains essential to building a better future for Nigeria.
