Starmer Resigns As UK Prime Minister Amid Labour Revolt

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, June 22, 2026, announced his resignation, ending a brief premiership shaped by internal Labour Party pressure and declining political support.

Starmer said he would step down as both prime minister and Labour leader after mounting dissent within the party over poor electoral performances and weakening public approval.

He is expected to remain in office in a caretaker role until a successor is chosen before Parliament returns in September.

His exit comes less than two years after Labour’s landslide victory in July 2024, which ended 14 years of Conservative rule and returned the party to power with a strong majority.

However, his leadership came under growing strain through 2025 and 2026 amid disappointing local election results, internal divisions, and rising questions over Labour’s direction.

Pressure from MPs and senior party figures intensified in recent weeks, culminating in his decision to step aside to avoid deepening party instability.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, is widely seen as a leading contender to succeed him as Labour prepares a swift leadership contest.

Starmer’s departure adds to Britain’s ongoing political turnover since the 2016 Brexit referendum, marking another shift in a decade of instability at the top of government.

Despite his resignation, he leaves office having restored Labour to power after more than a decade in opposition.
