Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reportedly threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the replacement of several candidates linked to his Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano State.
The changes, according to a document cited by Daily Post, were approved by Kano NDC Chairman Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga to enforce a previously agreed 60-40 power-sharing formula between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the party’s existing structure.
Under the arrangement, the Kwankwasiyya group is entitled to 60 per cent of elective positions and party offices, while the NDC structure retains 40 per cent.
The revised list affected nominations for several federal constituencies, including Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Sumaila/Takai and Gwale.

Adjustments were also made to House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu.
The document was copied to the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman.
The dispute comes days after NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced Kwankwaso as his running mate on May 31, 2026, sealing a major opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.
The latest disagreement highlights growing tensions within the coalition and raises fresh concerns over its unity as preparations for the 2027 polls intensify.
