Lafarge Africa Becomes HBM Nigeria After $1bn Huaxin Deal

Lafarge Africa Plc has officially changed its name to HBM Nigeria Plc, completing a rebranding process following its acquisition by Chinese cement giant Huaxin Cement.

The development was announced in a notice dated June 23, 2026, signed by the Company’s Secretary and Legal Director, Adewunmi Alode, and addressed to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), shareholders, stakeholders and the investing public.

The company said shareholders approved the name change at its Annual General Meeting on April 30, 2026, while the Corporate Affairs Commission has formally registered the new corporate identity.

According to HBM Nigeria, the rebranding aligns with its long-term strategic objectives and commitment to delivering value to stakeholders.

The move follows Huaxin Cement’s acquisition of an 83.81 per cent controlling stake in the company from Switzerland-based Holcim Group. The $1 billion transaction, announced in December 2024, was completed in August 2025 after regulatory approvals were secured.

Before the sale, Holcim held its majority stake through Caricement B.V. and Associated International Cement Limited.

Following the takeover, the company unveiled plans to expand production capacity at its Ashaka plant in Gombe State and Sagamu plant in Ogun State to support growing demand in the construction sector.

HBM Nigeria said the name change does not affect shareholders’ rights or investments, noting that existing share certificates and electronic holdings remain valid and will be updated automatically by the registrars.

The change marks a new phase for one of Nigeria’s leading cement producers as it advances its growth plans under new ownership.
