The Federal Government has prohibited the use of motorcycles and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, introducing fresh traffic regulations aimed at improving safety and preserving the country’s newest coastal expressway.
The directive was announced on Sunday, June 28, 2026, by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, who said the restriction will be enforced from this week.
Dare said the highway was designed as a high-speed corridor and that allowing motorcycles and tricycles to operate on it could endanger lives and compromise the road’s long-term condition.
He added that the measure is intended to protect the strategic infrastructure and ensure it delivers its expected lifespan.

The ministry also outlawed the indiscriminate parking of trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles along the highway and on federal bridges across Lagos State.
It further warned against the dumping of refuse within highway corridors, saying such practices obstruct drainage systems, damage road infrastructure and create safety hazards.
According to the controller, traffic signs reflecting the new rules have been installed, while enforcement personnel will be deployed at designated points to ensure compliance.
He urged motorists and other road users to observe the new regulations, stressing that the measures are necessary to safeguard public safety, maintain free traffic flow and protect the Federal Government’s investment in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
