Fuel Tanker Causes Gridlock On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Motorists Stranded

Heavy traffic paralysed a major հատված of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday morning, leaving thousands of commuters stranded in a prolonged gridlock stretching from Longbridge to Magboro and beyond.

The congestion, which reportedly began around 7:30 a.m., was triggered by a fuel tanker that obstructed the roadway near the Magboro bridge, significantly disrupting traffic flow, particularly for vehicles heading outbound from Lagos.

Commuters took to social media to express frustration over the situation, with one user, Emperor Ridwan Abdyekeen, alerting the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) about the incident, describing the traffic as “a hell of gridlock.”

Another road user reported that vehicles around Aseese were nearly at a standstill, noting that although the obstruction at Magboro bridge had been cleared, movement remained slow toward Ibafo.

Inbound traffic toward Lagos was also affected, with reports indicating that some motorists driving against traffic worsened the situation, further disrupting the flow.

Traffic management agencies, including the Nigeria Traffic Radio, the FRSC, the Papa Oscar Response Team, and the Fire Service, were deployed to the scene to manage the situation and facilitate the removal of the tanker.

Authorities assured motorists that efforts were underway to restore normal traffic flow, adding that vehicles would be redirected back to appropriate lanes once the obstruction was fully cleared.

Motorists were advised to remain patient and adhere to traffic regulations as officials worked to ease the congestion.

As of the time of reporting, the exact cause of the tanker obstruction—whether due to a breakdown or a collision—had not been independently confirmed.

The incident highlights the persistent traffic challenges along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, where accidents and breakdowns frequently result in significant disruptions.
