ADC’s Rhodes-Vivour Accuses APC Of Using Violence To Retain Political Control

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in the 2023 Lagos State election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of relying on violence and intimidation because it lacks genuine public support.

Rhodes-Vivour made the allegation while speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, where he criticised the ruling party’s approach to elections and political competition.

According to him, a political party that enjoys the confidence and support of the electorate would have no reason to resort to violence, intimidation or other undemocratic tactics to secure victory.

“If they are loved and wanted by the people, they will not depend so much on violence and intimidation,” he said.

The former Lagos governorship candidate argued that the strength of any democratic government should be measured by the freely expressed will of the people rather than coercion or fear.

He maintained that Nigerians are increasingly demanding accountable leadership and credible elections, stressing that political parties must earn public trust through good governance and effective service delivery instead of suppressing opposition voices.

Rhodes-Vivour also emphasised the need for political actors to uphold democratic principles and ensure that elections are conducted in an atmosphere free from violence, voter intimidation and manipulation.

His comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties intensifying efforts to challenge the ruling APC across the country.

The APC has yet to officially respond to Rhodes-Vivour’s remarks.
