OpenAI Launches Next-Generation GPT-5.6 Models

OpenAI will open public access to its GPT-5.6 artificial intelligence models on Thursday, July 9, 2026, after completing a cybersecurity review that initially kept the technology under a controlled release.

The company announced on Wednesday, July 8, that its newest AI lineup Sol, Terra and Luna will move from limited preview to wider global availability.

The phased rollout began in late June, when access was restricted to a small group of trusted US partners while federal officials examined the security implications of the models’ advanced capabilities.

At the centre of the review were concerns that increasingly powerful AI systems can uncover weaknesses in software code, creating risks if such capabilities are misused by cybercriminals or other malicious actors.

The GPT-5.6 family is designed to serve different categories of users. Sol is OpenAI’s flagship model built for demanding reasoning tasks, Terra targets everyday use with lower operating costs, while Luna is engineered for faster performance at a more affordable price.

OpenAI said it has already started expanding preview access beyond the United States ahead of the full public launch.

The company has maintained that although collaboration with government on AI safety is important, temporary release restrictions should not become the standard for future deployments.

It is also working with US authorities on a structured process for assessing frontier AI models before their public release.

The launch comes as competition among leading AI developers gathers pace, with companies accelerating efforts to deliver more powerful systems while responding to growing security expectations.

OpenAI also disclosed that Terra will cost about half as much as GPT-5.5, a pricing strategy aimed at widening adoption and strengthening its position in the increasingly competitive artificial intelligence market.

The public debut of GPT-5.6 marks another step in the fast-moving AI race, where innovation, affordability and security are becoming equally important measures of success.
