Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Denies Divorce Filing Claims

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming she filed for divorce from her husband, describing the reports as false and unverified.

Okwu-Kanu made the clarification in a statement shared on her verified X handle on Friday, following online reports alleging that she had commenced divorce proceedings against the IPOB leader.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she wrote.

She criticised the spread of unverified claims about her family, saying such reports were fabricated zand harmful to responsible journalism.

Okwu-Kanu advised members of the public to confirm information about her family only through her official channels or authorised representatives. She also appreciated those who contacted her to verify the report before circulating it.

Nnamdi Kanu and Okwu-Kanu got married in 2009. The IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on terrorism-related charges in November 2025.

Kanu was convicted on all seven counts brought against him. He received life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years’ imprisonment on one count, and five years on another, with all sentences to run concurrently.

Following the judgment, Kanu filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to challenge the conviction.
