The Lagos State Government has commenced plans to introduce dedicated vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to improve accessibility, mobility and inclusion across the state.
The initiative was discussed on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, during a meeting between the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) and the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), where both agencies agreed to collaborate on the development and implementation of the scheme.
Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, said the proposed number plates would improve identification of vehicles conveying persons with disabilities and make movement easier for members of the disability community.
He disclosed that the agency had begun discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and would commence necessary administrative procedures with LASODA to advance the project.

LASODA General Manager, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the proposed system would cover all categories of persons with disabilities, including parents of children with disabilities and caregivers, adding that it would strengthen recognition and access to support services.
She said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to equal opportunities and a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities can participate fully in social and economic activities.
The move builds on the Lagos State Government’s earlier announcement in 2025 of plans to introduce disability-specific vehicle number plates as part of broader measures to promote accessibility and social inclusion.
It is also in line with the Lagos State Special People’s Law of 2011, which established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, prevent discrimination and promote equal opportunities across sectors.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to finalizing the framework for the scheme, with senior officials from LASODA and MVAA participating in the discussions.
