The Kogi State Police Command has announced the restoration of peace in Abugi and neighbouring communities following recent reprisal attacks that claimed at least five lives.
The violence reportedly followed the killing of a herder in the community on Thursday, which triggered a retaliatory attack and heightened tension in the area.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, said security authorities had moved to contain the situation and prevent further violence.
According to her, the Area Command in Lokoja worked with traditional rulers, community leaders and other relevant security and community stakeholders to address the crisis and promote reconciliation.
“The Area Command, Lokoja, in conjunction with relevant security and community stakeholders, conducted critical engagements with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders, focusing on reconciliation, restoration of peaceful coexistence and addressing the underlying causes of the conflict,” Afusat noted.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the State Criminal Investigation Department had launched a comprehensive investigation into the killings, with officers working to identify and arrest everyone suspected of taking part in the attacks.
She said the investigation would be conducted thoroughly and that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The investigation will be pursued diligently, and any suspect found culpable will be brought before the law to face the appropriate legal consequences.
Personnel remain strategically deployed within the affected communities to prevent further violence and protect lives and property,” she said.
Afusat added that the series of interventions and consultations with stakeholders had helped restore normal activities in Abugi and surrounding areas.
She, however, stressed that the return of calm would not affect the ongoing investigation, as security personnel would continue monitoring the communities to prevent a fresh outbreak of violence.
“The restoration of calm, however, does not in any way halt the ongoing investigation, as the Command remains committed to ensuring that those responsible for the loss of lives are identified and brought to justice,” she added.
The Commissioner of Police also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding residents and property throughout Kogi State.
He urged residents to obey the law and assist security agencies by promptly providing information about suspicious persons, movements or activities.
