The Ogun State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Solomon Adeola, has mourned veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, saying he supported the late actor’s medical treatment and did everything possible to ensure he received the necessary care.
Adeola, in a tribute signed alongside his wife, Temitope Adeola, and shared on Facebook on Monday, described the actor’s death as particularly painful following his “courageous battle” with illness and the hopes and prayers for his recovery.
The senator said he and his family stood by Ogogo and his family throughout the actor’s illness, supporting his treatment and remaining hopeful that he would recover.
“During those difficult moments, we stood closely with him and his family, supporting his treatment and doing everything humanly possible to ensure that he received the necessary medical care,” the statement read.
Adeola said the family continued to pray for the actor’s recovery and hoped he would return to his loved ones and admirers.
“We remained hopeful and prayerful that he would overcome the illness and return to the family, friends and countless admirers who cherished him. Sadly, despite all efforts, it has pleased Almighty God to call him home. Indeed, God knows best,” he added.
The APC governorship candidate described Ogogo as more than an accomplished veteran of the entertainment industry, referring to him as a “dear brother” and a proud son of Ilaro and Ogun West.
According to him, the actor’s decades-long career brought joy to generations of Nigerians and contributed significantly to the development of the country’s film industry.
“Alhaji Taiwo Hassan was more than an accomplished veteran of the entertainment industry to us; he was a dear brother and a proud son of Ilaro and Ogun West, whose remarkable career brought joy to generations and contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry,” Adeola said.
He added that Ogogo’s talent, humility and body of work would preserve his memory among Nigerians and his numerous admirers.
“His talent, humility and enduring body of work will ensure that his memory lives on,” he said.
Adeola extended his condolences to Ogogo’s wife, children and other members of his family, as well as residents of Ilaro and Yewaland and the late actor’s colleagues and associates in the entertainment industry.
He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the actor’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
Adeola’s tribute comes after Ogogo’s daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, acknowledged his support for their father during his illness.
Kaira had earlier appealed for medical assistance for the actor and expressed appreciation to Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, for helping the family offset some of Ogogo’s medical bills.
The daughters had clarified that their appeal was primarily for medical intervention and not financial donations.
Ogogo died at about 3pm on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66, according to a burial announcement by veteran actor Jide Kosoko.
Following his death, his remains were taken to his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Sunday ahead of his burial on Monday.
The actor was buried according to Islamic rites, with family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers gathering in Ilaro to pay their final respects.
Ogogo had battled stage-four cancer before his death. His daughters had disclosed that doctors eventually informed the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of his condition.
The late actor was a prominent figure in Yoruba-language cinema, with a career spanning more than four decades and hundreds of film appearances.
His death has continued to attract tributes from political leaders, colleagues, fans and other members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, many of whom have celebrated his contributions to Yoruba cinema and the wider Nigerian film industry.
