Tinubu Hails Hausa People As “Pillars of Nigeria’s Progress”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Hausa people for their contributions to Nigeria’s development, describing them as important pillars of the country’s progress.

Tinubu made the remarks in a message on Wednesday, August 26, to mark World Hausa Day, an annual celebration of the Hausa language, culture and heritage.

The President highlighted the resilience and cultural richness of the Hausa people, while noting the growing influence of the language within Nigeria and beyond.

“The Hausa language, without doubt, has flourished and has become a major language of unity and commerce across the world.

“I congratulate the vast Hausa community on the occasion of Hausa Day, which is being celebrated at the historic Daura Palace today,” Tinubu said.

The 2026 celebration, like the previous year’s event, was held at the palace of the Emir of Daura in Katsina State.

Themed “Our Culture, Our Future,” the event focused on preserving the Hausa language and cultural heritage. Traditional rulers, scholars and other cultural figures attended the gathering.

Beyond the physical celebration in Daura, the World Hausa Day Movement has continued to expand through digital and international platforms. University departments dedicated to Hausa studies, journalists and activists have contributed to efforts to promote the language and preserve its cultural heritage.

World Hausa Day was introduced on August 26, 2015, by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari as part of an effort to promote the use of Hausa online and draw attention to challenges confronting the language.

Jari encouraged people to use Hausa on social media by sharing traditional proverbs, creating Hausa expressions for emerging concepts and technology, and publishing images showcasing Hausa traditions and culture.

The initiative has since grown into an annual international celebration, with participants using the occasion to promote the language, cultural identity and heritage of Hausa-speaking communities around the world.
