President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, directing the flags to remain at half-staff from 6 p.m. that day until sunset on Tuesday, September 1.
The order covers the White House, federal buildings, military posts, naval stations and federal vessels across the United States and its territories, as well as US diplomatic and military facilities abroad.

Parton died in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 25, ending a career spanning more than six decades. She became one of country music’s most influential figures, with enduring hits including Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You.
Her legacy also extends to philanthropy, notably through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to children to encourage early literacy.
Presidential flag-lowering orders for private citizens are uncommon. Similar tributes have honoured figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Neil Armstrong and Bob Hope. Trump also ordered flags lowered after the deaths of Charlie Kirk in September 2025 and Pope Francis in April 2025.
