The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed speculation that he plans to relocate to Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike said his frequent visits to the state were intended to keep in touch with his supporters and monitor political activities, rather than signal plans to move away from Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor spoke on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while responding to questions during his monthly media parley in Abuja.
According to Wike, he could not afford to remain in the nation’s capital and depend solely on assurances from political associates that political activities were progressing smoothly in Rivers State.
“It’s not about relocating, it’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk to them, and also do those things you know how to do very well, not to take chances,” Wike said.
He explained that remaining physically connected with the state was necessary to enable him to assess developments and ensure that political arrangements were being properly implemented.
“So I’m not relocating. I don’t need to relocate, but I also have to be in touch with my people so that I don’t just sit in Abuja and then say that everything is going on there well,” he said.

Wike added that he would not rely entirely on assurances from political candidates and associates without personally verifying developments on the ground.
“I don’t want to sit in Abuja and candidates are saying, ‘oh, don’t bother, everything is going on well’. I have to come home and see that all those things are going on. ‘Have you done this? Have you done this? What about this? What about this?’” he said.
The FCT minister also described the period as politically significant, stressing that he would remain actively involved in preparations for the 2027 election.
He questioned why he should remain passive and allow former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to emerge victorious.
“I can tell you my parents are still very much alive. Of course, this is time for politics.
“You want me to fold my hand for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” Wike asked.
Wike’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments across Rivers State and heightened preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
