The Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka Williams Abang, has died in Abuja.
Williams died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, while receiving medical attention. His brother, Nkang Williams, announced the death on Sunday, September 13.
The development has triggered mourning across the state, with colleagues and associates expressing shock over the sudden loss.
Nkang said the family was struggling to accept the death, describing Williams as a close companion whose absence had left a deep void.
Pius Kejuo Osang, a former councillor representing Abo Ward in Boki Local Government Area, said he was stunned by the news, having been with Williams only days earlier.
“I don’t understand, I was with him on Tuesday, I slept in his hotel,” Osang said.

Michael Gabriel Jr., Executive Media Assistant to Senator John Owan-Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, described Williams as a dedicated public servant and a good man.
Gabriel said Ikom Local Government Area had lost a committed public servant and prayed for strength for his family, colleagues and loved ones.
Williams retained the Power and Renewable Energy portfolio in Governor Bassey Otu’s July 2026 cabinet reshuffle.
His death comes about 20 months after another serving commissioner, Abubakar Robert Ewa, died on January 8, 2025. Ewa, who headed the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, died at the Arubah Specialist Hospital in Calabar after attending the State Executive Council meeting earlier that day.
The circumstances surrounding Williams’ death have not been officially disclosed. Reports that he slumped have not been independently established as the cause of death.
Williams’ passing marks another loss of a serving commissioner in the Otu administration.
