The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Talban Wushishi, has died after a brief illness.
Yusuf died on Friday, August 28, 2026, with his Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, confirming the development. Nwosu said the chairman had taken ill shortly before his death.
News of Yusuf’s death reached Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer, prompting mourning among his associates and political figures in the state.

Yusuf, a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was appointed chairman of the NPC by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2025. He was sworn into office on December 2 and formally assumed duty the following day.
He succeeded Nasir Isa Kwarra, whose five-year tenure as chairman of the commission ended on October 28, 2025.
Before his appointment to the NPC, Yusuf held several public and political positions, including Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Niger State governor.
Further details on the circumstances of his death and funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Friday evening.
