King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has died at 34, ending a remarkable reign that began when he was just three years old.
Oyo died at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced.
The kingdom did not disclose the cause of death, although reports said the monarch had been receiving medical treatment in the United States.
Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo inherited the throne after his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, died on August 26, 1995. He was enthroned on September 12 that year, becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Because of his age, regents managed the kingdom during his childhood. Oyo assumed direct royal responsibilities after turning 18 and was formally crowned in 2010.

He went on to become a prominent cultural figure in Uganda, presiding over Tooro for almost three decades.
Tooro is one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms and is located in the country’s west. While the monarchies have no formal political authority under Uganda’s republican system, they remain influential custodians of culture and tradition. The kingdoms were restored in 1993 after being abolished in 1967.
Oyo’s death leaves the institution facing another succession, almost 31 years after his father’s death first placed the crown on his head.
The kingdom said continuity was assured, with its prime minister confirming that Oyo had left a prince who is expected to serve as heir. Further succession arrangements will follow Tooro customs.
News of the king’s death triggered widespread mourning across Uganda. Opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine was among those who paid tribute to the late monarch.
Oyo’s life traced an unusual royal arc: he inherited the Tooro throne as a toddler, grew into its adult sovereign and died at 34 after nearly 31 years as king.
