Two persons died in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, after a refuse heap collapsed onto a building at Ikot Effanga, along Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying officers who arrived at the scene found that the falling waste had struck a building reportedly situated within a valley.
The victims were identified as Nfon Imé, male, and an unidentified female. Their remains were recovered and deposited at a mortuary.
Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the command had begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse and was assessing the scene to establish what led to the tragedy.

The command appealed for calm and cautioned against speculation, assuring that further details would be released once verified.
The incident occurred in an area with a long history of waste-management and environmental concerns.Â
Residents of Ikot Effanga have previously raised concerns over the proximity and expansion of the local dumpsite, particularly its effects on surrounding communities.
However, no official link has been established between those longstanding concerns and Friday’s collapse. The circumstances that triggered the incident remain under investigation.
