Nigeria’s Falconets have kicked off their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on a winning note after defeating Poland 1-0 in an international friendly on Friday.
The encounter, played at the Municipal Stadium in Brzeg, Poland, saw Mary Mamudu emerge as the match-winner after scoring the only goal of the game.
Mamudu broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, finding the net in the 45th minute plus one to send Nigeria into the break with a narrow advantage.
Poland attempted to respond after the restart, but the Nigerian defence stood firm as both teams failed to add to the scoreline.
The victory was confirmed by the official Super Falcons X account following the final whistle.
The friendly was the first of two warm-up matches lined up for the Falconets as they fine-tune their preparations for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Poland from August 31 to September 22.
Nigeria are scheduled to play their second preparatory match against South Korea on September 1.
The Falconets have been placed in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia and will be hoping to make a deep run in the tournament.
Nigeria have reached the final of the U-20 Women’s World Cup twice, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014, but have yet to lift the trophy.
With the tournament fast approaching, Friday’s win provides a confidence boost for the Nigerian youngsters as they target a historic campaign on home soil in Poland.
