…how a Ramadan revelation forced the Nollywood actress to rethink her future
For Omowunmi Dada, the relationship appeared to have all the ingredients of a future together. Then came Ramadan.
The Nollywood actress has opened up about a relationship that ended after she discovered that the man she was dating, whom she had known as a Christian, was observing the Ramadan fast and considering Islam partly because it would make his mother happy.
What followed was not simply a disagreement between two lovers. It became a deeper conversation about faith, marriage, children and the kind of home Dada wanted to build.
Speaking during a recent conversation with media personality VJ Adams, the actress recalled how she became curious when her partner told her he was fasting during Ramadan. When she asked why, his explanation made her realise that their understanding of religion and its place in marriage might not be the same.
For Dada, that realisation was significant.
She had already formed a clear picture of the kind of marriage she wanted: a home where husband and wife shared the same Christian faith and raised their children within that faith.
Her partner, however, had a different expectation. According to Dada, he was willing to attend church with her but also wanted their future children to visit the mosque and learn about Islam.
That was where the relationship reached its defining crossroads.
Dada said she wanted to be able to practise her faith alongside her husband without religious differences becoming a permanent feature of their family life.
“I want to be able to hold hands with my husband in one faith, in unity as a family,” she said.
The decision to walk away was therefore not presented as a rejection of the man or of another religion. Dada was careful to distinguish her personal preference from any judgment of Muslims or Islam, noting that she has Muslim friends whom she respects.
Her concern, as she explained it, was compatibility.
For the actress, the question was not simply whether two people from different religious backgrounds could fall in love. It was whether they could agree on the values that would guide their marriage and, eventually, the upbringing of their children.
And when their answers appeared to be different, Dada chose not to gamble with a future she had already imagined.
WHEN LOVE MEETS BELIEF
Relationships can survive differences in personality, background, interests and even distance. But for some couples, religion carries consequences that reach into almost every aspect of married life.
Where will the family worship? Which traditions will the children follow? What happens during religious celebrations? How much influence will extended families have? And what happens when both partners believe their faith should shape the children?
These are questions that often remain in the background while a relationship is new.
For Dada, however, they became impossible to ignore.
Her former partner reportedly tried to persuade her to continue the relationship, offering a compromise in which he could attend church with her while still maintaining his connection to Islam.
But Dada’s concern was not merely where the couple would worship. It was the religious identity of the family they would eventually create.
That distinction ultimately shaped her decision.
Rather than wait until marriage to confront a disagreement over something she considered fundamental, she chose to end the relationship.
A PRIVATE CHOICE, A PUBLIC LESSON
Dada’s revelation has resonated because it touches on an issue many couples confront but do not always discuss openly enough before making long-term commitments.
Love can create a powerful desire to overlook differences. But marriage introduces questions that romance alone cannot answer.
Religion is one of them.
For couples from different religious backgrounds, compromise may work when both partners genuinely agree on what that compromise will look like. But where one person’s expectations for the future directly conflict with the other’s, the disagreement can become much bigger than the original relationship.
Dada’s experience shows why conversations about faith, children, family traditions and personal values can become critical before marriage rather than after it.
Her story also underlines an important distinction: choosing a partner who shares one’s faith is a personal preference. It does not require hostility towards people of another religion.
That appears to be the position Dada was making when she stressed her respect for her Muslim friends while explaining why she wanted a Christian husband.
BEYOND THE RELATIONSHIP
Away from the personal revelation, Dada’s professional journey has also entered an important phase.
The actress has established herself as one of the recognisable faces of Nollywood, building an acting career that has taken her across different genres and productions.
She has also expanded beyond acting into production, taking on greater responsibility in the development and execution of film projects.
Her recent credits include Evi, Okanjuwa and Meltdown, while she is also part of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, the screen adaptation of Lola Shoneyin’s acclaimed novel.
Dada also features in Black Market, combining her work in front of the camera with production responsibilities.
The transition reflects a wider evolution in her career. She is no longer simply an actress waiting for the next role. She is increasingly participating in the process of creating and shaping the stories she wants to see on screen.
Her talent has also earned industry recognition. In 2022, she won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Country Hard.
Today, her career continues to expand as she balances acting, production and the demands that come with being a prominent figure in Nollywood.

Yet her latest revelation offers audiences a glimpse into a side of her life that is rarely seen on screen.
THE CHOICE BEHIND THE STORY
The most striking part of Dada’s story is not simply that a relationship ended because of religion.
It is that she recognised a fundamental difference before the relationship progressed further and chose to confront it.
For her, marriage is not just about loving the person standing beside her. It is also about sharing a direction, particularly when it comes to faith and family.
Her decision may not represent the choice every couple would make. But it reflects the importance of knowing which values are negotiable and which ones are not.
In an industry where celebrities often keep their private relationships away from public scrutiny, Dada’s decision to share this experience has opened a window into the personal principles behind the public personality.
She may have lost a relationship she once hoped would work.
But in walking away, Omowunmi Dada appears to have chosen clarity over uncertainty and conviction over compromise.
For the actress, love may be important.
But when it comes to marriage, she wants love to walk in the same direction as faith.
