NCDC Sets ₦100,000 Weekly Stipend For Ebola Contacts

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has approved a weekly stipend of ₦100,000 per person for individuals isolated or quarantined following Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case.

NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, announced the measure in Abuja on Sunday, October 25, 2026, following concerns over the cost of feeding, accommodation and supporting families during monitoring.

He said the agency had arranged food and accommodation, adding that the emergency stipend would be reviewed as the situation developed.

Idris urged state governments to prepare adequate funding and logistics for similar health emergencies, stressing that the responsibility should not rest solely with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Nigeria confirmed an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease on October 20, 2026, involving a woman who travelled from Uganda to Abuja. She developed symptoms on October 7 and sought medical attention on October 11.

By October 25, health authorities had identified 53 primary contacts for monitoring. Surveillance and contact tracing continued, with exposed individuals monitored for 21 days after their last possible exposure.

The case forms part of a wider regional outbreak involving the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Nigeria. On October 23, the Federal Government said genomic analysis had found a genetic relationship between the viruses detected in Nigeria and Kenya, but this did not establish a direct epidemiological link.

Nigeria’s response draws on its successful containment of an Ebola outbreak in 2014, when rapid case identification, isolation and contact tracing helped prevent sustained transmission.
