Kidnapped UI student regains freedom after family paid ransom

Emmanuel Odetunde, a student of Sociology at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, who was kidnapped on Monday, February 22 has been set free by his abductors after the family paid a ransom.

Odetunde was kidnapped after some unknown gunmen, believed to Fulani herdsmen, broke into his father’s farm in Oke Odan, Apete area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and whisked him away.

His abductors were said to have stormed the father’s farm and demanded to see his father but upon learning that the man was not around decided to abduct his son.

His abductors on Tuesday contacted the family and asked them to pay N100 million ransom for Emmanuel to be set free.

A family source said Emmanuel was later freed on Thursday by his abductors after ransom was paid to them. The source, however, did not the amount the family paid.

The source said that the family contacted police, local hunters and Amotekun to help them secure Emmanuel’s freedom from the kidnappers but were deserted by the security agents, who allegedly did not play any role to have the abductee set free from his abductors.

Police are yet to confirm the release of Emmanuel.

However, Emmanuel is said to have confirmed his freedom following a text he sent to his friends on social media saying that the kidnappers fed him “wet cassava and dirty water”.
