The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia has successfully carried out its first major brain surgery, marking a significant development in specialist healthcare delivery in the state.
The breakthrough was disclosed on Tuesday by the state government following the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti on Monday.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, attributed the successful operation to the administration’s continued investment in the health sector, describing it as part of the ongoing transformation of healthcare services in Abia.
Giving details of the procedure, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, said the patient was a 19-year-old man who was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.
According to Uche, the patient arrived in a deep coma with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of six out of 15. His condition subsequently deteriorated, with the score dropping to five.
He explained that the patient was suffering from massive bleeding in the brain, which was exerting pressure on the brainstem and required urgent surgical intervention.
Uche said transferring the patient to another hospital could have been fatal because of the severity and urgency of his condition.
He said the availability of neurosurgical facilities and specialists at the Abia State Specialist Hospital made it possible for the medical team to immediately commence the operation.

The commissioner disclosed that the surgeons evacuated more than 100 millilitres of blood clot from the patient’s brain during the procedure.
He added that the patient had shown signs of recovery and had started moving his limbs while undergoing further treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
Uche said the successful operation demonstrated the growing capacity of the state-owned hospital to handle complex medical conditions that previously required patients to seek treatment outside Abia.
The state government described the development as part of its broader efforts to upgrade medical infrastructure, attract specialist doctors and improve access to advanced healthcare services for residents.
The successful neurosurgical procedure is expected to further strengthen the position of the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre as a referral facility capable of providing specialised medical care within the state.
