ABU Endorses NSC Drive To Build Sports Economy

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has endorsed the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) reform agenda, describing it as a key step towards building a sustainable sports economy and advancing national development.

The endorsement followed a courtesy visit by the university’s management to the NSC headquarters in Abuja, where Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, led a delegation that met with NSC Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, to discuss collaboration on sports development.

The outcome of the meeting was announced in a statement issued by the university’s Directorate of Public Affairs on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Ahmed commended Dikko for driving reforms aimed at repositioning sports as a major economic sector capable of creating jobs, attracting investment and boosting national growth.

He described the NSC chairman, an ABU alumnus, as a distinguished ambassador of the university whose achievements in sports administration continue to inspire younger generations.

The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed ABU’s commitment to supporting the commission’s agenda, noting that the university’s designation as one of Nigeria’s six Sports Centres of Excellence and its hosting of the 2028 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games place it at the forefront of sports development.

Ahmed added that sustained investment in sports governance, administration, research and talent development would be critical to unlocking the full potential of the country’s sports industry.

In his response, Dikko thanked the university for its endorsement and pledged closer collaboration with ABU to advance ongoing reforms and create more opportunities across the sports sector.

The delegation included Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Advancement, Research and Innovation), Professor Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi; Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; Director of DAIE, Professor M. I. Umar-Buratai; Director of Sports, Dr Suleiman Usman Omeiza; Director of Public Affairs, Auwalu Umar; and the university’s Abuja Liaison Officer, Malam Haruna Ajo.
