ADC Slams Tinubu’s Push for UN Security Council Seat Amid Insecurity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s call for Nigeria to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, insisting that such an ambition rings hollow while insecurity continues to devastate communities across the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the administration was pursuing global recognition at a time it had yet to demonstrate the capacity to guarantee the safety of its own citizens.

He noted that Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing Tinubu at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York, had once again pressed for Nigeria’s inclusion in the Security Council.

However, Abdullahi argued that “a government struggling to contain bloodshed within its borders cannot credibly demand a place at the table of global security.”

The ADC highlighted recent attacks in Zamfara and Katsina States, where hundreds of people have been killed or abducted in the past two months.

It also pointed to Amnesty International’s report that more than 10,000 lives have been lost this year to armed violence.

According to the party, “what is happening is not simply a failure of security, but a collapse of responsibility, written in blood and piles of innocent bodies.”

It accused the administration of offering condolence messages instead of decisive action.

The party further criticised Tinubu for being absent from the commissioning of 874 military cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy, choosing instead to commission the renovation of the National Arts Theatre in Lagos.

The ADC said this reflected “misplaced priorities,” adding that the President had become “a passive spectator while villages burn and prayers end in gunfire.”

The party concluded that Nigeria’s request for a Security Council seat would remain unconvincing until the government showed seriousness in protecting its own people.
