General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has appealed to members for significant financial contributions, requesting ten individuals to donate ₦1 billion each and another hundred members to contribute ₦100 million each. The appeal was made during a church programme and has since generated wide reactions online after video clips of the moment surfaced.

Adeboye, one of Nigeria’s most influential Christian leaders, has previously urged members to give beyond the traditional 10% tithe, describing it as a starting point rather than the limit for giving. In past sermons, he has shared testimonies of individuals who pledged far higher percentages of their income and, according to him, experienced remarkable financial breakthroughs.

Born in 1942, the cleric has led the RCCG since 1981, overseeing its growth into one of the largest Pentecostal churches in Africa, with branches in more than 190 countries. Known for his conservative style and emphasis on holiness, Adeboye has also been associated with teachings linked to the prosperity gospel, which encourages members to give generously with the expectation of divine blessings.

The RCCG’s large-scale programmes, including its annual Holy Ghost Congress and monthly Holy Ghost Services, attract massive crowds both in person and online, often accompanied by substantial fundraising drives to support church projects. Adeboye’s latest appeal comes at a time when Nigeria is facing significant economic challenges, sparking debate among the public about the place of such requests in the current climate.
