Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced plans to establish an independent commission of inquiry immediately after Saturday’s governorship election to investigate reported killings and other acts of violence linked to the electoral period.
Adeleke made the announcement on Friday, August 14, while addressing journalists in Osogbo. His speech was read by the state Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.
The governor expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones during the violence and said the planned inquiry would determine the circumstances surrounding the incidents and identify those responsible.
“The Osun State Government expresses its deepest condolences to the families of all persons who have tragically lost their lives in incidents of violence during this election period.
“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation.
“The government under my watch wishes to assure the people of Osun State that next week Monday, immediately after the election, an Independent Commission of Inquiry will be constituted to investigate all reported killings and acts of violence connected with this election period.

“The commission will establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and recommend appropriate actions to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence.”
Adeleke also said his administration would develop a framework to assist families affected by the deaths.
“The memories of all victims will be appropriately honoured. The election will come and go, but we will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future,” he said.
The governor’s announcement comes against the backdrop of several reported cases of violence and alleged extrajudicial killings in Osun in recent months.
Suspected cult groups have been accused of involvement in some of the incidents, with allegations that some operate under the influence or protection of political actors.
The August 15 election is expected to take place amid heightened political tension, with authorities and civil society groups repeatedly calling on candidates, supporters and security agencies to ensure a peaceful poll.
