Former presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adebayo Adewole, has cautioned that Nigeria is at risk of “one-man rule” rather than the feared emergence of a one-party state. He made the remarks during an interview on Channels TV on Thursday.
Adewole emphasized that while the country maintains multiple political parties, the growing concentration of power in the hands of a single leader poses a threat to democratic norms.
“Nigeria is not going towards a one-party state. What Nigeria is at risk of is a one-man rule,” Adewole said, highlighting concerns over political centralization and the potential weakening of institutional checks and balances.

The SDP politician urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, participate actively in democratic processes, and safeguard institutions to prevent the erosion of the country’s democracy.
Political analysts have noted that recent developments in party politics, including leadership disputes and challenges in the electoral system, underscore the need for sustained public engagement and accountability from leaders.
Adewole’s warning comes amid a broader discourse on Nigeria’s political future, with citizens and civil society groups increasingly emphasizing the importance of democratic governance and institutional independence.
