Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, sparked laughter and applause on Thursday, after announcing a pay raise for his official music band, following their lighthearted performance at a road commissioning ceremony in Abuja.
The event marked the inauguration of a newly completed collector road linking Mabushi to the Judges’ Quarters in Katampe, a project handled by a Chinese construction firm.
During the ceremony, the band’s lead singer delighted the crowd with a playful performance, mimicking lyrics in what sounded like Chinese, an apparent nod to the origin of the contractors. The humorous act quickly became the highlight of the event.
Clearly entertained, Wike responded with a grin, declaring:

“Now that my band can sing in Chinese language, I’ll now increase their fees.”
The audience erupted in cheers, and the band followed up with another animated song, chanting, “Agreement is agreement..” They repeatedly called out Wike’s name before ending the performance with the phrase “Chi hu chan,” drawing even more laughter from those in attendance.
The moment added a touch of humour and cultural flair to the official proceedings, reflecting Wike’s signature blend of serious governance with public engagement.
