Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on security agencies to step up operations aimed at rescuing Nigerians being held captive and protecting communities facing security threats across the country.
Akpabio spoke on Tuesday, September 29, during his welcome address as the Senate resumed plenary after a recess of more than two months.
He said Nigeria could not claim to be entirely free while any of its citizens remained in captivity, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure their release.
“So long as a single Nigerian languishes in captivity, a part of Nigeria is held captive; and this Chamber cannot call itself free of the burden.”
Akpabio said the Senate would continue to deploy its legislative, budgetary and oversight responsibilities to examine measures that could help prevent attacks and improve the protection of vulnerable communities.
Beyond the security situation, the Senate President appealed for restraint and constructive political engagement as preparations begin for the next electoral cycle.

He urged politicians to campaign and pursue their political ambitions without exploiting religious, regional or community differences in ways that could heighten tensions.
Akpabio also stressed the importance of allowing political candidates to explain their policies and respond to scrutiny, while ensuring that voters can make their choices without threats, intimidation or violence.
“No electoral prize is worth a Nigerian life. No victory deserves celebration if it leaves the nation wounded.”
He urged senators to remain focused on their legislative responsibilities and maintain decorum despite the increasing political activity ahead of the elections.
According to Akpabio, differences among lawmakers based on political affiliation, region or ideology should not prevent them from conducting their duties with mutual respect and preserving national unity.
The Senate President assured Nigerians that the chamber would continue working until the expiration of its mandate, maintaining its legislative functions even as political campaigns gather momentum.
